AN ARTIST WHO TOOK A CHANCE
Unlike many of the artists featured on Brave Records, who have been creating, producing and distributing music all their adult lives, Kathryn Mackensen is new to the field, much later in her life. Kathryn has lived a rich, full life with two successful careers, first in International Banking and then in Executive Coaching for Sales and Presentation Skills.  Like many of us, she had a dream of making and sharing music--a dream that got set aside for twenty-five years as she successfully pursued her consecutive careers. Now she has done something rare and inspirational: she has invited that dream of making music to resurface and, over time, with inner encouragement, to flourish! Profoundly inspired by the message of the little-known 1995 song "We Can Be Kind" when she first heard it, Kathryn started herself on the journey of reclaiming her love of singing, first in the supportive environment of her church, then doing cabarets for charity events, and finally deciding that she was ready to make a recording of “We Can Be Kind” for the world to hear. She gathered within herself the courage to record (and with it, she gathered steam in the encouragement she received from those who heard her emotive, lovely voice ringing out.  She is happy to share and distribute this song--which she has made her own personal "theme song"--with great joy, and with the clear purpose of getting it out into the world so others can not just be moved by it, but help bring to life its powerful message about kindness.

A UNIQUE MESSAGE

Kathryn was deeply moved by the idea behind the lyrics: "What do we do when there's nothing we can do?...We can be kind. We can take care of one another. We can remember that deep down inside we all need the same thing."  Inspired initially by the 1980's AIDS epidemic, Composer David Friedman created this song to help wake up a nation to the idea of opening our hearts when we find others or ourselves hurting, even what is causing the hurt may be confusing or frightening. The song got relatively some signifiant exposure at the time, and has lived on for decades. But for Kathryn, now feels like the moment to share it with as broad an audience as possible. The message, she feels, is timeless. And the idea of kindness is one of the most powerful and accessible concepts available to each one of us, moment-to-moment, here on the planet.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT

You can listen to "We Can Be Kind" for free here on BraveRecords.com, but for anyone interested in owning a copy, and/or in supporting Kathryn's mission of helping this song reach as many hearts as possible, you can download the song on iTunes, Amazon, or directly from the artist at CDBaby. You can also stream it on Spotify or other digital music sites. Prices vary according to the distributor, with all proceeds going to Gaining Ground which seemed like the perfect match for Kathryn because of the significance of their work with organic farming and hunger relief.

A MESSAGE TO YOU

Thanks, as always, for listening. Kathryn's message to you is this: "May this song touch your heart as it has touched mine. And perhaps most of all, may it invite you to dig deeper in those moments in your own life where you feel as if there is "nothing you can do." Perhaps there IS something you can do, always. Perhaps it has to do with a softening of the heart. Maybe everything good blooms and opens out from there."

LYRICS

WE CAN BE KIND

By David Friedman

So many things you can't control

So many hurts that happen everyday

So many heartaches that pierce the soul

So much pain that won't ever go away

How do we make it better?

How do we make it through?

What can we do when there's nothing we can do?

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

Nobody really wants to fight

Nobody really wants to go to war

If everyone wants to make things right

Then what are we always fighting for?

Does nobody want to see it?

Does nobody understand?

The power to heal is right here in our hands.

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

And it's not enough to talk about it

Not enough to sing a song

We must walk the walk about it

You and ; Do or die

We've got to try to get along

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

And maybe we'll find

True peace of mind

If we always remember

We can be kind.

Latest release: Keith Hampton's JOURNEYMAN - December 14, 2014

Keith Hampton: Journeyman

New Keith Hampton music coming in 2012 - February 7, 2012

New songs, new ideas, new energy... let's co-create some tunes together!

Since the release of my 2010 project, TYRANENA, I've written lots of songs and had the chance to perform them live in my favorite coffeehouses venues.

Now, in 2012, it feels like the right time to assemble some of them together in a new collection, to be released at the end of the summer.

"Dream Vessel" (featured in the Kickstarter video) is one of my favorites.

Here's a demo of "Carry," which is also going to be included on the new album. Written in honor of Kory & Erin :)

Because my label, Brave Records, offers digital distribution, and I'm lucky enough to have talented friends and collaborators who will help keep production and manufacturing costs down (including limited edition CDs), the estimated cost for this project is $2,500.

YOU CAN HELP!

-Want to contribute to planning the song order and selection?

-Want to assist with the cover art?

-Want to help name the album?

-Want a song written for, or dedicated to you?

Let's get started....

Choose a support category that fits for you, and/or send supportive energy! Stay tuned for updates, including live performances of the new songs.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU :)

Brave Records announces Gregorian Chant album: "Blessed is the Ordinary" - October 30, 2008

Michael Olbash and six other singers, collectively known as the Stepping Stone Chant Project, joined in a Vermont countryside chapel during the summer of 2008 to record "Blessed is the Ordinary." A full Latin Mass for a single Sunday, this music was taken from an ancient source: an abbey in Solesmes, France.

Olbash says of the CD: "One of the primary aims of this recording is to demonstrate to the listener the sublime beauty and genius of using the chants prescribed in the Graduale Romanum for an ordinary Mass on an ordinary Sunday.

"It is our hope that parish music directors might be inspired to sing the communion chant - even if it is coupled with other music, and even if it is not the 'proper' chant of the day - at every single Sunday Mass."

Olbash is a graduate of Harvard and Rensselear, and holds musical positions with numerous churches and choral ensembles near Boston, Massachusetts. Brave Records is an independent label for contemporary & traditional folk, world, and classical music, based in Wisconsin.

"Blessed is the Ordinary" may be previewed or purchased online at CD Baby.

Harvey Burgett joins Brave Records with "Just As I Am" - August 1, 2008

New York composer Harvey Burgett has released his first CD of sacred vocal compositions, titled "Just As I Am." The late Revered Rhys Williams, longtime minister of Boston's First and Second Unitarian Church, held Burgett's work in high regard, calling it "the kiss of the sun, the dance of the angels, and the power of our protracted religious dreams."

"Just As I Am" is now available at CD Baby.

Boston Secession's second CD arrives! - December 31, 2007

Boston Secession’s second CD explores the hidden depth and profound beauty of minimalism: an important modern compositional technique that exploits simple repeating patterns to create rich vocal textures. This 2007 recording features significant choral masterworks: William Duckworth’s Southern Harmony [1981], a choral work based on 19th century shape-note hymns, Arvo Pärt’s The Beatitudes [1990] and Gavin Bryars’. And so ended Kant’s traveling in this world [1997]. Also featured is the premier of “Transport,” a movement from Secession’s composer-in-residence Ruth Lomon’s oratorio-in-progress, Testimony of Witnesses.

"Bright Eyes" (ALS Benefit Single) - June 8, 2007

ANNA HUCKABEE TULL & BRAVE RECORDS RELEASE "BRIGHT EYES" DIGITAL SINGLE TO BENEFIT ALS RESEARCH album cover
In 2003, Andy was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease: a crushing fatal illness, which leaves the mind sharply intact while slowly rendering all of the body's muscles mute.

For the creation of this song, though he was no longer able to speak or type with his hands, Andy worked with singer-songwriter Anna Huckabee Tull of CustomCraftedSongs.com, via special email technology, to offer up the words of wisdom, inspiration, and love that he chose to leave behind for his daughter, Rachel. Those words have come to life in the song "Bright Eyes."

So far, there is no cure for ALS. But all those who love Andy, and love people just like him, struggling with profound courage, insight, and grace in the face of this terrifying disease, want to help. You can become part of finding a solution. All proceeds from the sale of this CD go to ALS Research.

Award-winning Boston Singer-Songwriter Anna Huckabee Tull lives in Somerville, Mass. In addition to her autobiographical songwriting compositions (see especially Open Now), she has carved out a pioneering and highly gratifying career writing commissioned songs of celebration, transition, and healing (see especially Other People's Stories, Love All Over the Place, and Every Day). You can learn more about Anna and her commissioned songwriting at www.CustomCraftedSongs.com.
