AN ARTIST WHO TOOK A CHANCE
Unlike many of the artists featured on Brave Records, who have been creating, producing and distributing music all their adult lives, Kathryn Mackensen is new to the field, much later in her life. Kathryn has lived a rich, full life with two successful careers, first in International Banking and then in Executive Coaching for Sales and Presentation Skills.  Like many of us, she had a dream of making and sharing music--a dream that got set aside for twenty-five years as she successfully pursued her consecutive careers. Now she has done something rare and inspirational: she has invited that dream of making music to resurface and, over time, with inner encouragement, to flourish! Profoundly inspired by the message of the little-known 1995 song "We Can Be Kind" when she first heard it, Kathryn started herself on the journey of reclaiming her love of singing, first in the supportive environment of her church, then doing cabarets for charity events, and finally deciding that she was ready to make a recording of “We Can Be Kind” for the world to hear. She gathered within herself the courage to record (and with it, she gathered steam in the encouragement she received from those who heard her emotive, lovely voice ringing out.  She is happy to share and distribute this song--which she has made her own personal "theme song"--with great joy, and with the clear purpose of getting it out into the world so others can not just be moved by it, but help bring to life its powerful message about kindness.

A UNIQUE MESSAGE

Kathryn was deeply moved by the idea behind the lyrics: "What do we do when there's nothing we can do?...We can be kind. We can take care of one another. We can remember that deep down inside we all need the same thing."  Inspired initially by the 1980's AIDS epidemic, Composer David Friedman created this song to help wake up a nation to the idea of opening our hearts when we find others or ourselves hurting, even what is causing the hurt may be confusing or frightening. The song got relatively some signifiant exposure at the time, and has lived on for decades. But for Kathryn, now feels like the moment to share it with as broad an audience as possible. The message, she feels, is timeless. And the idea of kindness is one of the most powerful and accessible concepts available to each one of us, moment-to-moment, here on the planet.

A MESSAGE TO YOU

Thanks, as always, for listening. Kathryn's message to you is this: "May this song touch your heart as it has touched mine. And perhaps most of all, may it invite you to dig deeper in those moments in your own life where you feel as if there is "nothing you can do." Perhaps there IS something you can do, always. Perhaps it has to do with a softening of the heart. Maybe everything good blooms and opens out from there."

LYRICS

WE CAN BE KIND

By David Friedman

So many things you can't control

So many hurts that happen everyday

So many heartaches that pierce the soul

So much pain that won't ever go away

How do we make it better?

How do we make it through?

What can we do when there's nothing we can do?

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

Nobody really wants to fight

Nobody really wants to go to war

If everyone wants to make things right

Then what are we always fighting for?

Does nobody want to see it?

Does nobody understand?

The power to heal is right here in our hands.

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

And it's not enough to talk about it

Not enough to sing a song

We must walk the walk about it

You and ; Do or die

We've got to try to get along

We can be kind

We can take care of each other

We can remember that deep down inside

We all need the same thing

And maybe we'll find

If we are there for each other

That together we'll weather whatever tomorrow may bring

And maybe we'll find

True peace of mind

If we always remember

We can be kind.
